Star Arbitrators

 Star Arbitrators
We would like to recognize and celebrate those arbitrators who have generously contributed their time and joined us over the last 15 years.

Glenn Haley, Hong Kong (originally from Australia)

Partner, Hong Kong, Commercial Dispute Resolution, Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner

"It has been an honour and a privilege for me to be involved with the Vis East Moot since its inception. I was the Branch Chairman of the East Asia Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators when Louise came to CIArb with her vision for creating the Vis East Moot. To watch the Moot growth from its humble beginnings to its current fantastic state is similar to the pride which a parent feels in watching a gifted child mature and grow. Another important aspect of the Moot for me is that, being in the middle of the enthusiasm of the participants and watching the thrill that they get from arbitration, the Moot renews and strengthens my interest in this aspect of dispute resolution each and every year."

Amb. David Huebner, (ret'd) New Zealand

David previously served as the American Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa. Prior to this, he practiced international arbitration from an office he established in Shanghai.

A graduate of Princeton University and Yale Law School, he is a member of the Law Society of England & Wales and the Bars of California, New York, and the District of Columbia.  A Fellow of CIArb, he has specialized in state-entity, intellectual property, and investment disputes. Over the course of his career he practiced in several jurisdictions around the world, served as chairman & ceo of a large int'l law firm, taught int'l law and policy at the University of Southern California, lectured on int'l law and business topics at universities in China and Australasia, chaired the California Law Revision Commission, served on the boards of several NGOs, and been named to various “best” practitioner lists. He is an avid netizen and has received awards for his innovative work as Ambassador.

I have not yet missed a Vis East because the important work it does training and networking future practitioners is essential to support.  It performs a function like no other entity or event, and under the wise guidance of Louise Barrington it performs that function exceptionally well.  Plus, the great energy, enthusiasm, and talent of the participants reminds me of why I became a lawyer myself.

Hew Dundas, Scotland

Hew Dundas is an International Arbitrator, Mediator and Expert Determiner with particular expertise in the oil/gas/energy/power sectors.  He was fortunate to have attended the first Vis (East) Moot in 2004 and was blown away in the very first argument by the outstanding skills of Tsinghua University who went on to win in the Final.  What has been even more satisfying has been helping lesser [known] teams and seeing them develop rapidly from the first to the fourth day. For example, [he facilitates] the development of the team which represents Diplomatic Academy of Việt Nam (not even a law school), whom he has coached every year since its debut in 2009.  Hew’s award-presenting speech in 2007, praising Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok) (and gaining the a standing ovation) for having made the most impressive improvement since 2004, gave rise to the Spirit of the Moot Award.

Giovanna Kwong, Hong Kong

Stephenson Harwood HK

A Chartered Arbitrator and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Giovanna Kwong is a panel arbitrator, an accredited mediator and a mediator assessor of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. She is also an arbitrator of the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration. She was an examiner and a member of the International Practice and Standards Committee of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators for many years.

Giovanna has acted as an arbitrator and a mediator in commercial and contractual disputes and has practised as a solicitor in England & Wales and in Hong Kong for over a decade in each jurisdiction. She has represented financial institutions, public bodies, and corporate clients in numerous complex disputes.

"It is a delight to immerse in the enthusiasm of university students from around the world in promoting international arbitration and enhancing their advocacy and legal skills through participation in Vis East. It is also breath-taking to watch the scale with which those skills and devotion has grown during successive years of Vis East and to witness the Vis East student participants associating themselves with international arbitration in their careers."
